One of the most dramatic effects and colour vibrancy is seen when applied over dark colours. Endless colour shifting shimmer also occurs on mid-tones. For subtler, more delicate iridescence, layer over light colours.

How to Use ChromaFlex
The most dramatic effect is over a dark background
The darker the surface colour ChromaFlex is applied to, the stronger and more vibrant the shimmering colour appears. When applied over a dark Fusion Mineral Paint, Alchemy Chalk and Limestone Paint, or Milk Paint it produces a show-stealing, intense shimmering colour. While still very noticeable on mid-tone colours it tends to be more subtle while offering a beautiful shimmer. When applied to light colours it gives a soft opalescent glow.
A little goes a long way – the thinner the application the more impactful colour. The thicker it is applied it will create texture.
One thin coat is enough
ChromaFlex is a thick paint where a little goes a long way. This allows full control of texture, colour and shimmer strength. Apply with a brush, then use a spray mister to thin it out and create a luminous effect. Mist and brush!
If adding water, when wet, it appears milky; it then dries clear and reaches peak intensity once fully dry.
Always experiment and test to achieve your desired results.
Create translucent layers
ChromaFlex can be mixed into any of our water-based mediums:
- Tough Coat Gloss: really increases the sheen and effect
- Clear Furniture Wax: about 10 drops of paint will pigment a 50g container.
- Decoupage & Transfer Gel: Adds a shifting, luminous layer to decoupaged papers and transfers.
- Embossing Paste: Produces raised, dimensional, colour-flip effects—stunning for stencils.
Mix shades together
Blend different ChromaFlex colours for custom shifts. Try:
- Blue Butterfly + Turquoise Peacock for an electric blue-green flip
- Scarlet Dragonfly + Violet Hummingbird for a midnight-to-sunset effect
- Turquoise Peacock + Violet Hummingbird for a mermaid inspired radiance
Top Coat
No top coat is required.
For extra protection or an ultra-glass-like sheen, seal with Tough Coat Gloss.
Avoid matte topcoats if you want to preserve full iridescent intensity.
Brush strokes are part of the charm
ChromaFlex naturally shows soft brush texture, embrace it!
It contributes to its hand-crafted, artisanal look. These can be minimized with a light spray mist of water using our Continuous Spray Mister.
Quick Tips from Artists Who Love ChromaFlex:
- Want a design that only appears at certain angles? Paint or stencil subtle ChromaFlex motifs over a matte black base. They practically disappear head-on and glow when you move.
- Layer very thinly over paint glazes over metallic paints for a next-level holographic effect.
- Test first. The shift is dramatic and changes with every lighting condition!
